what’s therapy like?
This may be your first time seeking therapy or maybe this isn’t your first experience with a counselor. Whether you’re new to therapy or seeking a fresh perspective, I congratulate you on taking this step! Here is what you can expect when working with me:
Each person’s story is sacred to me and I do everything that I can to respect your privacy. I am legally bound to HIPAA and confidentiality laws, meaning that I won’t share your name or other important information that you tell me with anyone else unless you give me permission (there are a few exceptions to this- such as emergencies- I will go over these potential circumstances during our first consultation so that you are completely in the loop). Conversations and questions about confidentiality are welcome. You can rest assured knowing that what you discuss with me, stays within our meetings.
If I happen to see you outside of therapy, I will not acknowledge you unless you approach me first. You are totally welcome to say “hello!” to me! Although, I will keep our greetings short. Again, this is to protect your confidentiality.
Our first few meetings will consist of me getting to know you and helping you get acquainted with me as your provider. I’ll listen to what it is that’s bringing you to therapy and help you create sustainable goals. From there, your treatment will be tailored to your unique needs.
I take a Person-Centered approach, meaning that I believe you have the answers you need and just need some help finding them. In other words: You are the driver and I am in the passenger seat gently pointing out potential routes and roadblocks to your destination. Although, that doesn’t mean that I will not challenge you when you need it so that you can gain effective change. I want to help you reach the goals you set so that you can step into a healthier version of you!
Your story deserves to be heard and witnessed without judgement. I strive to create an atmosphere that is safe and comfortable so that you can be your authentic self.
